How to better my skills? (animation, special effects)?
I want to work with Pixar one day, or simial animation company.
I am decent at drawing, nothing spectacular like deviantart might have..
I know nothing about animation. (i am good at photoshop/html)
What would you recommend I do while i wait for the college to start (i plan on starting in september/december) to perfect/improve/learn my skills?
Lots and lots and lots of figure drawing, my friend!
The best animators all know how things move, and that's why they look so good - it looks /natural/. Before they'll even let you begin animating at school, they'll make you sit through loads of foundation classes; so get a headstart on them. Try drawing figures in movement; a person sitting nicely and smiling is for painting majors, a five year old doing back flips in the living room is for animators. At first it'll be difficult for sure, but the more you do them, the more you'll get used to it and the better you'll be once you eventually begin animating. See if there's anywhere that offers figure drawing classes, and join them - art schools /love/ to see figure drawings in your portfolio, trust me, don't even think about put drawings from photos in there - they can tell. Don't blush at the naked people, you'll get used to it soon enough!
Download some programs, play around with them, and get comfortable with them. You don't have to be amazing, just get a feel of the programs like Maya and Flash.
Read some books! Flip through the 'Art of...' books for animated movies, the biographies of Disney animators, and of course, those blessed textbooks and guides for animators! I'd reccommend - '
Force: Dynamic Life Drawing for Animators' by Mike Mattessi, great book! It'll definitely get you doodling.
Oh, and don't forget to draw and try your hand out at traditional animating yourself. All you need is a wad of paper - start simple, make a stick figure run! Then get more and more advanced, and you'll be fine.
