What is the best free 3D animation program that is similar to Maya? I've been using Maya for a while now, and need a free program that is similar to it, with good quality rendering and a similar interface. Or something close if that's too impossible. Maya costs thousands of dollars, so a free version won't be identical. However, Blender http://www.blender.org is free, and is very capable. It can do almost everything Maya does, and a few things Maya doesn't do. It has all the same modeling tools (subdivision, nurbs, boolean ops) the same texture tools (vertex paint, texture paint, procedural textures, U/V mapping) the same animation tools (skeleton, armature, soft body, particals) and a few things Maya doesn't have: notably a built-in gaming and physics engine that lets you build 3D games based on your models with no programming. Blender's interface is not like Maya's. There will be some learning curve to switching to this very different interface, but once you get it, you'll never go back. I switched from Maya to Blender, and now I can't imagine going back to Maya even if it was free.
