do i need to have good drawing skills to get into field of computer animation ?

i have poor drawing skill but good visual sense. also can you please tell what skills are needed for animation. thanks.

Yes, you have to have very good drawing skills. As in most fine arts fields, no formal education or training is required; if you are talented and are able to get your work viewed, you stand a reasonable chance of finding a job. But it is extremely difficult to achieve the level of professionalism expected in this industry without study. A bachelor’s or graduate degree in graphic design with an emphasis on computer skills is extremely helpful in getting interviews or portfolio reviews. Certain universities offer specific semester courses in computer animation on Oxberry Animation cameras (the kind that filmed Fantasia) or using Silicon Graphics computer workstations with 2- and 3-D software. Most important for an aspiring animator is that your work be of exceptional quality, and to that end, many aspiring animators intern or work for little pay to learn the craft from established animators, game designers, and programmers. As with most creative fine arts fields, the number of people wanting to become animators exceeds the demand; therefore, open positions are competitive. The rate of success in the field is low, but those who do achieve it are extremely satisfied.

Draw it

DRAW IT

Remember the article “Painting Without a Brush? I hope you tried it.

Well, what if you wanted to draw something, say a cat or dog, a bird, tree, or just make something  up?  Then you found you had nothing to draw with. Would you just forget about it and do something else? Well, there are ways of drawing without pencils, or charcoal, or crayons.

First go outside and look for something you with which you might be able to draw. For example: a stick, or several sticks of different thicknesses. What about stalks of flowers? Some are soft and some firm and strong. What about a piece of bamboo or the edge of a strip of cardboard? A card, a drinking straw?

Go back inside and get your cartridge paper drawing book.  Use Indian ink- if you can find some, or else use one tube of black, or red, or blue, or green paint. Use a strong color or the drawing might not show so well. Mix the paint thinly with a little water, on something flat.

Take one of your drawing tools and dip it in the paint. Draw something, perhaps a straight or wiggly line…whatever you like. Now take another tool and draw a circle or whatever. Join the two images together.

Choose which tools are best for drawing lines, circles, squares, triangles and other things. Dots are interesting, so are crosses. They can be heavy or light. You can put one colour alongside another.

Animals are good to draw. They can look funny or sad, in fact you can make up an animal. Most animals have ears, a tail, four legs, eyes, mouth, and some have big teeth.

Trees are good for drawing, too, also bushes and grass. They are lots of different shapes and sizes. Some are very tall, others very small.

Now here’s a super idea for what you can do with drawings. When you finish drawing, what about cutting them out – the trees, the animals and the other things you drew. Cover a whole page of cartridge paper with one colour (use a brush or whatever you like) and let it dry. Cut out your drawings and paste them onto the colored page. They could look really awesome.

Once you’ve had several practices at this you will probably turn out something really sensational.

What about making cards for special days like birthdays, and Christmas, any time you like best. Perhaps just cards to send to your friends.

Happy drawing.

Atara has a Fine Arts degree from Curtin University in Western Australia. She held several exhibitions before turning to writing. Her interest in art has not wavered, but lots time is necessary if one wants to paint. In Artara's case other commitments have snatched the time she used to devote to painting.
