Just thought I'd post another watercolor sketch card real quick while on my lunch break. This time it's one of my character Time Agent Mack.
I've just been skimming by on work recently and have been finding it especially hard this last month or so to get anything done on time. So as of today, I'm implementing a 9 to 5 block schedule. Basically I sit down at the beginning of the week and plan out blocks of time to focus on whatever task needs to get done and plan out all of my breaks and lunches beforehand. The end result looks a lot like the schedules I used to get when I worked at Convergys( tech support call center).
Keeping a schedule can seem daunting or even threatening to a lot of creative types, especially those who make a full time living as an artist. But it helps a lot when it comes to discipline and productivity(two more words artsy types sometimes find dangerous, but are really the key to working in the art biz). I find when my slacking or my lack or work ethic is getting REALLY out of hand, keeping a schedule takes the pressure off of getting things done. If I sit down and tell myself: "all you have to do today is this one thumbnail/layout/penciled page and you can take your time." --then nothing gets done. But if I sit down and go "Ok, From 11:30am to 1pm I have to sit down and try to figure out a thumbnail for this page", then the time limit motivates me into action. Then I have to decide that, while it may not be my greatest page design ever, I must sit at the drawing board and draw SOMETHING.
Keeping a schedule and developing self-discipline is a tricky thing that I have by no means mastered, but it helps out SO MUCH when it comes to the creative process. I challenge any other artists out there who read this blog to try implementing a schedule into their own work system this week and see how it goes. It's not something that needs to be done EVERY week. It's just done until your able to instill some new work habits that keep your day structured.
If you want me to go into more detail about my time management system, lemme know in the comments. Also feel free to leave a comment and let me know what you think of todays art or how your time management efforts in general are going.
Ok kiddos, have a great day and stay inspired!
Rachael
Quote of the day:
“Until one is committed, there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back. Concerning all acts of initiative (and creation), there is one elementary truth, the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans: that the moment one definitely commits oneself, then Providence moves too. All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred. A whole stream of events issues from the decision, raising in one's favor all manner of unforeseen incidents and meetings and material assistance, which no man could have dreamed would have come his way. Whatever you can do, or dream you can do, begin it. Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it. Begin it now.”--Goethe
